Summer Roundup & Picnic

Saturday, August 17, 2013 @ 6 pm

Christian and Bob Hoffman Farm/feedlot

The Hoffman Family was awarded the Ohio Commercial Beef Producer of the Year by the Ohio Cattlemen's Association during the 2012 banquet and annual meeting.

This will be an opportunity to take a close-up look at the Hoffman Farms cattle feeding facility.

This will be an evening of great food, outstanding fellowship, learning and sharing. Beyond just local cattlemen, several of our beef cattle industry friends in neighboring counties have also been invited to share in this relaxed evening of celebrating the legacy of our local beef cattle industry.

You don’t need to bring a thing because all the food, drink and utensils are being provided . . . just e-mail or call Marcy Love and tell her that you and your family will attend: kurtmarcylove@gmail.com or 740.862.6222

(please let her know by 8.14.13).

“Hamburger for the Hungry”

Ohio Beef Ambassador and recently retired Fairfield County Beef Queen Sierra Jepsen is donating 200 pounds of locally grown, lean ground beef to area Food Pantries. During her presentation at the recent Fairfield County Cattlemen’s Association annual banquet, Jepsen spoke of her concerns for the needs of those throughout the county who have less than enough to eat.

As an example, nearly 4000 local families are served each month by Fairfield County food pantries. In an effort to bring awareness to the work of organizations like Fairfield County’s United Way and the food pantries who address the hunger situation across the County, Jepsen announced her donation, and challenged local cattlemen to do the same in the coming year.

In an effort to match Ms. Jepsen’s donation of 200 pounds of lean ground beef, the “Hamburger for the Hungry” campaign has been initiated. Local cattlemen have pledged to donate to local food pantries ½ pound of ground beef for each hamburger they sell at the upcoming Lancaster Festival Fair Day, being held at the Fairfield County fairgrounds.

Those wishing to help the cattlemen reach their goal and support the battle against local hunger are invited to find the Fairfield County Cattlemen’s gourmet hamburger stand located under a tent west of the grandstands at the Fairgrounds during Festival Fair Day activities. Fair Day runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 20.

A Little History

Fairfield County maintains a rich history of organized cattlemen’s groups.  In the late 40’s and into the 60’s, the organization was known as the Fairfield County Cattle Feeders.

After little activity for several years, Stan Smith, Program Assistant at OSU Extension in Fairfield County initiated an effort to recreate an active local cattlemen’s organization.  With the help of Jim Gibson of PLA and Bob Pontious, local cattleman, the group was reorganized into the Fairfield County Cattlemen’s Association in March of 1988.  Bob Pontious served as president of the new organization the first year.
